Uttarakhand Government: Uttarakhand government plans special assembly session to introduce UCC bill | India News

DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand government is all set to hold a special session of the state assembly post-Diwali to clear the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill which would pave the way for its implementation in the state, highly-placed sources confirmed to TOI on Saturday.
Once implemented, Uttarakhand will become the first state to adopt the UCC post-independence.At present, Goa is the only state that has a civil code that was introduced during Portuguese rule.
A five-member panel headed by retired Supreme Court (SC) judge, Justice Ranjana Desai, has completed the draft report for UCC implementation in Uttarakhand and the report is expected to be handed over to the state government in the next few days, a source said, adding that “all stakeholders have been asked to remain prepared for the special session.”
Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami told TOI on Saturday that “once the report is handed over to us, we will start the process to implement it in the state.” “There will be no delay from our side.” Meanwhile, opposition Congress criticised the proposed move to hold a special session. Party spokesperson Garima Dasauni said, “There is a strong political buzz of a special session of assembly being called but the question is that if UCC has national importance and the Union government wants to implement it later, then what is the point of experimenting with it in Uttarakhand? We want to first see the draft and make suggestions on points that have been left out or forgotten.”

Uniform Civil Code: Uttarakhand prepares draft, seeks to raise age for women’s marriage

According to officials, the UCC will provide a legal framework for marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance for all citizens irrespective of their faith. “It will help bring social harmony, end gender-based discrimination and strengthen women empowerment,” an official privy to the developments, had said earlier.

In June, TOI reported that the UCC may contain strong recommendations on live-ins, polygamy and polyandry ban and raise the marriage age of girls. As per an official, privy to details, CM Dhami had asked a senior state official earlier this month to start preparations for a special session.
